Listening and Learning

As an educator and a lifelong learner, I value the ongoing listening and learning process. As such, I am looking forward to my second town hall meeting on Monday evening (August 31) at 6 p.m. in the C.A. Johnson High School auditorium.

During the town hall meeting, I will share information about the opening of the new school year and our forward progress in Richland One. For example, today as I visited Sandel Elementary, Columbia High and Satchel Ford Elementary schools, I continued to see and appreciate the work of our teachers and staff in providing a positive learning environment for our students.

I also thank our parents, teachers, students and staff for providing invaluable feedback as we continue the rollout of our Digital Learning Environment (DLE) initiative. Our students have wonderful insights regarding their learning through technology.

The pieces are aligning as we all work together in transforming lives and empowering students to achieve their potential and dreams!

A Great First Week

Today marked the end of the first week of the 2015-2016 school year in Richland One. The eagerness of students and the anticipation of staff contribute to making this time one of purpose and excitement for a new year of learning by everyone. Again, I appreciate the efforts by our teachers, administrators and staff in getting ready for a new school year.

That said, this has been a great week in Richland One! Our schools look great outside and inside. Teaching and learning started on day one. I saw kindergartners counting to 100, as well as middle schoolers sharing information about their preferred learning styles. We are excited that school is back in session!

I also want to express my appreciation to our parents for partnering with us in this educational journey for our students. By working together, our students will benefit even more this year.

Best wishes to all for a successful 2015-2016 school year.

Back-to-School Time

We had an excellent Back-to-School Convocation this week. Our students made us proud, our employee choir and faculty jazz band lifted our spirits, and everyone is excited about the opportunities that the 2015-2016 school year offers for our students.

I would like to thank everyone for their hard work in preparation and support of the start of the new school year. We look forward to working with our community and partnering with our parents in this journey.

Also, to our students, have a restful weekend and be ready on Monday morning.

It’s time to head back to school, Richland One!

New Opportunities, New School Year

Believe it or not, summers are incredibly busy in education. Buildings have received fresh coats of paint. Playgrounds have been spruced up. In some cases, mobile classrooms are added to campuses. In addition, administrators have been working to review last year’s data and create instructional plans moving forward. Teachers have been attending trainings to grow in the profession. And, some students have been involved in summer programs to increase their skills. All of this work allows us to begin again in a new school year.

The weeks leading up to a new school year bring with them brand-new opportunities to make a positive impact on the lives of our students. From our Digital Learning Environment initiative to the Community Eligibility Program (free meals for all students), increased STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) activities and so much more, I am very excited about the 2015-2016 school year and what we offer our students.

I welcome back our teachers next week and we look forward to our students returning on August 17. Thank you all for being being a part of the Richland One community.
