This week, Richland One administrators gathered for two days of “leadership learning” at our 2015 Summer Leadership Institute. Through the Leadership Institute and other professional development activities, the goal is to build capacity in our school leaders, so that they are able to move our schools to new levels of success for the benefit of our students. Richland One is fortunate to have a talented teaching force, committed administrators and support staff focused on this goal.
We know that success does not just happen. It takes all of us speaking a common language and engaging in positive supportive work relationships around a common vision, mission and purpose. Our digital learning environment (DLE) transformation continues. We are building on our professional learning communities’ processes for student success. In addition, we are implementing a more strategic structure for school support that will move the entire district forward.
I appreciate the work of our school and district administrators and their commitment to student success. By working together, we are transforming students’ lives and their futures for the better.
This has been an exciting week for us as we welcomed our new teachers to the Richland One family.
This morning, I had the opportunity to speak with teachers who are not only new to the district but also new to the profession. They were energetic, enthusiastic and excited about beginning their teaching careers. We are happy that they are getting their start in teaching in Richland One!
I shared with them that they are joining a noble and very important profession that is the gateway to promising futures for our students. Theirs will be the voices of encouragement and support that many of our students will need to be successful in reaching their goals, dreams and aspirations. Teaching is tough, but it is even more rewarding.
I welcome our new teachers to Richland One where we “transform lives through education, empowering all students to achieve their potential and dreams.” Have a great 2015-2016 school year!
Over the past week, I have had the opportunity to visit a few of our summer enrichment and learning opportunities that are occurring in the district. One program is the Freedom School at W.A. Perry Middle School. In this program, which is facilitated by our staff and students from area colleges, our students engaged in six weeks of motivational learning activities, field trips and much more. Guest readers were welcomed with cheers as students shared their excitement about life and learning!
Another program of note was the Richland One Summer Reading Camp. Third-grade students from across the district have been meeting at four school sites. Students work to improve their skills in reading and writing, as well as in using technology and other resources. This program also included fun activities. After all, this is summer and it was a camp! With the assistance of the United Way, students also received back-to-school supplies.
Other summer learning activities have included computer coding camps and high school “8.5” activities to introduce rising ninth-graders to their new schools.
These programs show that summer is a time for fun and it can be a time of learning as well. Enjoy the rest of the summer!
As we prepare for the holiday weekend, please be advised that Straight from the Supe will resume on Friday, July 10, 2015.
We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Independence Day holiday!
