When I was at St. Andrews Middle School back in February, I had the opportunity to meet several district employees, students, parents and community members. One particular teacher introduced himself to me, and I could tell at that moment that he was passionate about being a teacher and proud to be in Richland One.
Well, fast forward to this week at the South Carolina Teacher of the Year banquet. I had the opportunity to spend much of the evening with that same teacher – Dreher High School math teacher and Richland One’s Teacher of the Year Daniel Oddo, who was a finalist for the state title.
Mr. Oddo talked about his school, the staff and, most enthusiastically, about his students. He shared stories about really getting to know his students and seeing math and life through their eyes. To do that, he literally sits in their desks at times while students demonstrate their skills and knowledge. They are in it together. That spark that can be found in math class can translate into a spark in life. Mr. Oddo is committed to making that happen for his students. He invited some of his students, present and past, to be his guests at Wednesday’s banquet.
I salute Daniel Oddo and all of our teachers for what they do for our students in Richland One. They make a difference in the lives of students every day.
Thank you, teachers!
