A Passion for Teaching

When I was at St. Andrews Middle School back in February, I had the opportunity to meet several district employees, students, parents and community members. One particular teacher introduced himself to me, and I could tell at that moment that he was passionate about being a teacher and proud to be in Richland One.

Well, fast forward to this week at the South Carolina Teacher of the Year banquet. I had the opportunity to spend much of the evening with that same teacher – Dreher High School math teacher and Richland One’s Teacher of the Year Daniel Oddo, who was a finalist for the state title.

Mr. Oddo talked about his school, the staff and, most enthusiastically, about his students. He shared stories about really getting to know his students and seeing math and life through their eyes. To do that, he literally sits in their desks at times while students demonstrate their skills and knowledge. They are in it together. That spark that can be found in math class can translate into a spark in life. Mr. Oddo is committed to making that happen for his students. He invited some of his students, present and past, to be his guests at Wednesday’s banquet.

I salute Daniel Oddo and all of our teachers for what they do for our students in Richland One. They make a difference in the lives of students every day.

Thank you, teachers!

Welcome to My Blog

As superintendent of Richland One, I want to take every opportunity to communicate and keep you informed about the school district from my perspective. As such, I would like to welcome you to my official blog, “Straight from the Supe.”

Through my blog, I will share information with you about what’s happening in the district, as well as my thoughts, observations and anecdotes. As I continue to listen and learn, I am thoroughly enjoying visiting our schools and departments and meeting district stakeholders. Whether it’s the “Pirate Project” at Rosewood Elementary or the expanding Middle School Montessori Program at W.G. Sanders Middle, quality student engagement activities and varied academic programs are alive and well in Richland One.

I greatly appreciate the work being done by our administrators, teachers and staff. Richland One is definitely committed to improving student opportunities and outcomes!

Straight from the Supe will be published each Friday. I hope that you will find my blog posts informative and enlightening as we journey together. I also invite you to follow me on Twitter @RichlandOneSupe.

Thanks again for your support of Richland County School District One.

Craig Witherspoon, Ed.D.
